Stocks Surge into Tense Weekend

Much will happen in the next few days that will resonate in the markets. But while traders are anxious, they’re apparently feeling optimistic.

The Dow ended the day up 115 points, spiking just minutes before the close. The index rose 213 points during the week. The S&P 500 rose 13.7 points, or 1%, on the day.

Greek voters will go to the polls on Sunday. The result could determine whether Greece stays on the euro. And next week, the FOMC will meet to determine monetary policy — traders are betting that the Fed is ready to act to spur markets, perhaps with an extension to “Operation Twist.” G-20 ministers are also meeting to coordinate plans to spur global economies.

We’ll have coverage of the Greek elections here at Stocks to Watch on Sunday. Jonathan Buck will be covering the voting from Europe.
