With the retirement of the current chairman and CEO of GE Capital, General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) says its CFO will assume those roles and his CFO job will be filled by the individual occupying the same position at GE Capital.

Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt appointed GE CFO�Keith Sherin to fill the chairman and CEO roles at GE Capital, with Sherin to be replaced by�Jeff Bornstein, who currently serves as the financial division's CFO, the company announced today. The appointments are effective July 1.

Immelt said: "Keith is one of the most respected CFOs in the world. He is a trusted colleague and a smart business partner." He credited Sherin with playing an integral role in "defining our growth strategy, implementing our compliance programs, and delivering value to our shareowners" and said his appointment "underscores the importance of GE Capital to GE."

Sherin has served as senior VP and CFO since 1998, having joined the company in 1981 through the GE Financial Management Program. Since then, he's has held senior financial positions in various GE businesses including aviation, plastics, and medical systems. Sherin earned his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

PCYC is evaluating other alternatives for development of this agent.

A multicenter Phase I/II of PCI-27483 in patients with locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer that are either receiving or are planned to receive gemcitabine therapy has completed enrollment. The Phase II portion of the study randomized patients to receive either gemcitabine alone or gemcitabine plus PCI-27483 (1.2 mg/kg twice daily).     Rounding out the S&P's double-digit gainers today is Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX  ) , which gained 12.7% after impressing Wall Street with both its current progress and its forward projections. The device maker beat top- and bottom-line expectations for the second quarter, and that performance spurred management into raising its full-year guidance. Boston Scientific has nearly doubled since the start of the year, and this bounce was driven by the fact that the company finally posted operating revenue growth after a multiyear slide. RBC Capital Markets analyst Glenn Novarro was a bit shocked by that, noting that he couldn't recall the last time Boston Scientific posted organic revenue growth, and that "most on the Street did not anticipate positive revenue growth until later this year or in 2014."     Finally, Covidien (NYSE: COV  ) has also entered the renal denervation race, although this company looks to be behind St. Jude and Medtronic as the leaders. Covidien purchased small-time renal denervation player Maya Medical last year for up to $170 million including milestone payouts, and it also received European approval for its OneShot renal denervation system last year. However, Covidien only launched the OneShot commercially in January, putting it back with Boston Scientific in racing to catch up with St. Jude and Medtronic's advance.

The company's revenue grew by just 2% year-over-year in its most recent quarter, and some of its largest businesses -- such as its defibrillation and spine segments -- have actually seen sales fall. Falling prices have hurt sales growth across the entire medical device industry, but tough competition has also crept up on Medtronic across its many businesses.

    St. Jude's sales slipped again in this area in its most recent quarterly report, falling 8% -- a bad sign for the company considering that CRM revenue makes up the foundation of its sales. Pacemaker sales in particular nosedived, dropping 12%. It isn't any easier across the industry: Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX  ) , which made the majority of its revenue from cardiac products last year, saw sales in its interventional cardiology and CRM businesses fall 11% and 7%, respectively, at a constant currency in 2012. Rival Medtronic (NYSE: MDT  ) , the largest purely medical device maker on the market, managed to eke out gains in its cardiac and vascular group over the last nine months but still lost 6% in cardiac rhythm disease management sales.

    Ironically, phase 3 data from Sarepta's direct competitor -- GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK  ) and Prosensa's (NASDAQ: RNA  ) drisapersen -- that's due in the fourth quarter could help the FDA answer the question about whether dystrophin is an acceptable surrogate endpoint. If increases in dystrophin correlate with clinical outcomes, it would support approving eteplirsen with less data. It's not clear to me whether Glaxo and Prosensa would have to share that correlation with the FDA -- the clinical phase 3 data should be sufficient for approval -- and if it does make those calculations whether the FDA could legally use it to support the approval of another drug since NDA data is proprietary while under patent.

Inovio�� Solution

The Company�� synthetic vaccine platform consists of its SynCon vaccine design process and electroporation delivery technology. It has developed a preclinical and clinical stage pipeline of vaccines. The Company�� synthetic vaccines are designed to prevent a disease (prophylactic vaccines) or treat an existing disease (therapeutic vaccines). Its synthetic vaccine consists of a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) plasmid encoding a selected antigen! (s), which is introduced into cells of humans or animals with the purpose of evoking an immune response to the encoded antigen. The Company�� synthetic vaccines are designed to generate specific antibody and/or T-cell responses.

The Company�� SynCon technology provides processes that employ bioinformatics, which combine extensive genetic data and sophisticated algorithms. Cancer Synthetic Vaccines

Two types of cancer preventive vaccines are available in the United States. The United States Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) has approved two vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix that protect against infection by the two types of HPV-types 16 and 18-that cause approximately 70% of all cases of cervical cancer worldwide. Cervarix manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is composed of virus-like particles (VLPs) made with proteins from HPV types 16 and 18. Cervarix is approved for use in females��ages 10 to 25 for the prevention of cervical cancer caused by! HPV type! s 16 and 18. Gardasil manufactured by Merck, is approved for use in females for the prevention of cervical cancer, and some vulvar and vaginal cancers, caused by HPV types 16 and 18 and for use in males and females for the prevention of genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11. The vaccine is approved for these uses in females and males ages 9 to 26. The FDA has also approved a cancer preventive vaccine that protects against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Inovio�� VGX-3100 is designed to raise immune responses against the E6 and E7 genes of HPV types 16 and 18 that are present in both pre-cancerous and cancerous cells transformed by these HPV types. E6 and E7 are oncogenes that play an integral role in transforming HPV-infected cells into cancerous cells. In March 2011, it initiated a randomized, double-blind Phase II study of VGX-3100 delivered using the CELLECTRA intramuscular electroporation device in women with HPV Type 16 or 18 and diagnosed with, but not yet treated for, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2/3. The study is designed to enroll 148 subjects. In January 2011, it announced the publication of a scientific paper in the journal Human Vaccines detailing potent immune responses in a preclinical study of its SynCon vaccine for prostate cancer targeting two antigens, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA).

In January 2011, the Company announced the regulatory approval of a Phase II clinical trial (WIN Trial) to treat leukemia utilizing its new ELGEN 1000 automated vaccine delivery device. The single dose level, Phase II study, called WT1 immunity via DNA fusion gene vaccination in haematological malignancies by intramuscular injection followed by intramuscular electroporation. This rapid move downward is surprising because the company recently signed a licensing deal with Roche (NASDAQOTH: RHHBY  ) to commercialize Inovio's multi-antigen DNA immunotherapies for prostate cancer and hepatitis B. As part of the deal, Inovio received $10 million upfront, and milestone payments could go as high as $412 million.
